Cycling in the Brabantse Kempen

My older brother Ed sometimes uses ‘Godgloeiende’ and ‘Gloeiige’ to emphasize his words, but in the Eersel sagas and legends, the Gloeiige is a stately landowner whom you can meet during the themed bike tour through several villages surrounding the Contente Mens in Eersel. His greed ultimately cost him his life, and he didn’t make it. And so a curse now rests upon him, and he will continue to glow forever. Be sure to keep this curse out of our vacation homes 😉. The Gloeiige is very large and is watching you; he wanders after you like a glowing ghostly apparition and whispers tauntingly in your ear, ‘my land, my land, this is my land’

Themed route

Start your morning in a relaxed atmosphere at your vacation home and cycle to the starting point, de Keizer eten & drinken, around 11.00 a.m. for a fresh cup of coffee. A great start to your bike ride, right…? There are no fewer than ten stops and photo spots along the way; here are a few: Gloeiige Verschijning, Heimelijke Fluisterpalen, Kempenmuseum Acht Zaligheden, Verhalende Zuil Cartierheide, Contente Mens en de waterpomp in Eersel, which glows softly when it gets dark. At the end of your bike ride, sample a delicious Gloeiend bier at de Keizer, a Belgian-syle triple beer with a hint of smoked Wildhogs Chipotle pepper, brewed in the Brabant village of Luyksgestel.

Bike rental

You can rent (electric) bikes, tandems, granny bikes, and kick scooters at Heesterbikes in Westerhoven, and the model you order will be delivered to and picked up from your cottage. Now that’s Brabant hospitality 😃.

Hiking

The forest is located 500 meters from your vacation home at BoksheideBuiten, where you can hike along the stretch of heathland from the Spijkert to the starting point at the parking lot of camping Ter Spegelt. You can choose between a semi-paved or unpaved path to hike to the Gloeiige. It’s even more fun to take your dog on an adventure Our vacation homes are pet-friendly! A brain-teaser cube and dog treats are waiting for your dog in every vacation home.

Horseback riding in de Kempen

The Gloeiige is known for striking fear into people’s hearts. Horses would suddenly see the ‘burning’ landowner made of polished steel appear arnound the corner, and as a result, he has been moved several times. What on earth did he do wrong? Can you see it? Or do you look into his mirror-and see yourself? Today, you can safely ride this themed route with your horse. The landowner also wreaked havoc on the Boksheide, claiming more land for the neighboring village of Weebosch at the expense of our estate 😉. Can you spot where valuable land has disappeared?

If you’re looking for a place to ride or horse-drawn wagon, the Brabantse Kempen with its gentle forest is a delight 🏇. A vast riding area with winding path, heathland, picnic spots, and horse-friendly places to eat and drink for lunch.
